Job Description: 

Earthwatch Institute is an international, non-profit organization that engages people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. With a budget of $20M Earthwatch Institute seeks an experienced Senior Accountant/Analyst to join our Finance team.

Duties:

The Senior Accountant is a critical role within the Finance Department reporting to the Director of Finance. You will be responsible for the maintenance of financial data that supports effective management and decision making throughout the organization. You will be responsible for recording financial transactions, preparing and reviewing account analysis, and research and resolution of technical accounting issues to ensure accurate presentation of the financial statements. You will also be expected to optimize Fundware General Ledger and related financial subledgers, while assisting in the preparation of monthly and annual reports.

Description of Duties:

  • Perform assigned month-end closing activities, such as revenue and expense journal entries, general ledger account reconciliations and analysis, including related affiliate accounting
  • Prepare and submit bi-monthly payroll and perform all accounting related to payroll, taxes, benefits, and related analysis
  • Review existing accounting and related operational processes, identify areas of process improvements and implement
  • With understanding of flow of financial data, create ad-hoc financial reporting and analysis
  • Prepare and review supporting schedules related to monthly and annual financial statement close process for specific assigned accounts
  • Assist Director of Finance in the analysis, development, and documentation of internal processes and controls related to the Finance and Accounting group in order to assure an appropriate level of internal control
  • Contribute to the external audit process by preparing schedules, locating supporting documents, and answering inquiries
  • Assist with annual budget preparation
  • Day to day general accounting tasks as assigned back-up for Senior Financial Accountant, AP and other accounting functions as needed.

Skills and experience required:

  • Accounting or related degree with progressive experience
  • Minimum four years non-profit accounting experience
  • Considerable knowledge of non-profit accounting practice and theory
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to create ad hoc financial reports and analysis using non-profit financial database/systems
  • Experience with non-profit financial accounting system required; experience with Fundware considered a strong plus
  • Grant accounting experience preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent computer skills including technical expertise in Microsoft Excel
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
