Job Description: 

The Land Trust Alliance is a national conservation organization whose mission is to save the places people love by strengthening land conservation throughoutAmerica. TheAllianceworks with Congress to pass tax incentives and funding that help landowners to choose conservation over development.  TheAllianceserves as a university for land conservation that trains the people who do the work to conserve cherished farms, forests, parks and trails. It strengthens community-based land trusts by providing workshops, online learning, research, standards, and accreditation services. TheAlliance’s conservation defense program helps land trusts ensure that conserved land stays protected forever. TheAllianceworks with the media to promote land conservation and engage more Americans in saving our most treasured places.

 

Summary Description:

Reporting to the Director of Development, the Donor Information Systems Specialist is directly responsible for the creation, development and management of a prospect research system to identify new and qualify current sources of private support for fundraising in support of the mission activities of the Land Trust Alliance.  This individual position is actively engaged in the organization’s prospect strategy and moves management processes, and provides front-line fundraisers with detailed briefings prior to calls and visits. 

 

Working closely with the Director of Development and IT Manager, this individual will also play a critical role in ensuring that the department’s systems and best practice protocols for data entry and maintenance, prospect management, analysis, and reporting are followed across the organization.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Prospect Research

  • Conducts research on prospects by identifying and gathering data about prospective contributors and board members from internal, corporate, foundation, and government electronic and print sources.  Analyzes and synthesizes appropriate information into profiles and assesses the prospect’s giving capability and philanthropic tendencies.
  • Prepares research profiles and briefings for Board members, the President, Executive Vice President, Vice President and other Alliance staff members as needed, takes debrief notes following trips or phone calls and enters notes into the database.
  • Conducts proactive research in related fields including business, philanthropy and the conservation community to identify potential prospects.
  • Assists with the development of an appropriate budget for research and creates and maintains a research library.
  • Creates a robust electronic and paper central filing system and trainsAlliancestaff on its use and maintenance. Explores the acquisition and implementation of technology to streamline access to hardcopy files.
  • Identifies appropriate research resources, establishes guidelines for prospect research and conducts training forAlliancestaff about prospecting tools and best practices.

 

Information Systems

  • Maintains best practices for data entry and prospect management in the database and works withAlliancestaff to ensure data integrity.
  • Ensures that records of solicitor actions and activities (phone calls, visits, letters, etc.) are entered into the database according to guidelines.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Development on the utilization of database systems to forecast, track and report corporate, foundation and individual moves management activities. 
  • ProvidesAlliancestaff and board with revenue reports on a weekly, monthly, and year-to-date basis detailed by fund, campaign appeal and gift.
  • Produces mailing lists and oversees the overall data integrity of these lists.
  • Works to enhance the quality and quantity of information on the database.
  • Establishes cooperative working relationships with department andAlliancestaff.
  • Ensures confidentiality ofAllianceinformation.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least three years’ experience in development prospect research and database systems.  
  • A proven track record of success with proactive and reactive prospect identification and research. APRA membership preferred.
  • A demonstrated ability to produce multiple assignments on deadline.
  • Strong computer skills. Experience with Microsoft suite and databases essential. Experience withCrystalReports or SQL Server Reporting Service (SSRS) a plus.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills with precise attention to detail.
  • Strong people skills and comfort interacting with staff.
  • Excellent written communications skills.
  • Ability to work both independently with limited supervision as well as collaboratively.
  • Strong interest in land conservation.
