Job Description: 

This is a full time, newly-created position with NatureBridge. Founded in 1971 as Yosemite Institute and based in San Francisco, NatureBridge is the leader in residential field science and environmental education for America’s youth. Its mission is to inspire personal connection to the natural world and responsible actions to sustain it. A signature partner of the National Park Service, NatureBridge currently operates campuses in Yosemite National Park; Golden Gate National Recreation Area; Olympic National Park; and Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, collectively serving more than 40,000 participants annually through field science, youth leadership and teacher training programs. NatureBridge is a 501(c)3 organization. 

Summary

The CIO provides hands-on leadership to NatureBridge in using information technologies to promote its mission of connecting youth to the natural world. The position reports to the President and CEO. The CIO will:

  • Provide leadership to the Board Operations Committee and to the IT Steering Committee in their regular review and periodic updating of NatureBridge’s Strategic IT Plan
  • Manage the conduct of the individual projects in the Strategic IT Plan to ensure that the anticipated organizational benefits are realized
  • Lead the organization in applying industry best practices to its use of information technology
  • Manage the IT organization’s human and technology resources to provide consistently high service levels to the user community

Duties and Responsibilities

IT Strategy:

  • Ensure the Board, the Operations Committee and the IT Subcommittee understand and support the organization’s IT strategy
  • Maintain and periodically extend the organization’s Strategic IT Plan
  • Establish the agenda for the monthly meeting of the IT Steering Committee, facilitate its meetings and carry out its decisions
  • Maintain effective working relationships with staff at all levels in the organization
  • Understand the business activities of each organizational unit, identify opportunities to improve its operation through the effective use of information technology and ensure its manager’s understanding of how to take advantage of these opportunities

IT Management:

  • Manage or oversee the conduct of individual projects, including feasibility studies, creation of project steering committees, requirements definition, business process redesign, vendor management, user training, data conversion, acceptance testing and cutover
  • Ensure ongoing and effective support for the NatureBridge website
  • Manage the maintenance and enhancement of installed application systems
  • Oversee the operation and support of all IT systems to maintain high service levels
  • Prepare annual capital and operating budgets
  • Hire, train, manage and evaluate IT staff members

IT Maintenance:

  • Negotiate with suppliers of needed IT services and equipment and manage their performance
  • Oversee the maintenance and enhancement of the organization’s IT infrastructure at the National Office and the four existing campuses; extend to new campuses as established
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for the effective use of IT resources throughout the organization
  • Ensure the security of information systems, networks, equipment and data
  • Establish and test data backup and recovery capabilities
  • Establish business continuity plans and procedures
  • Any other duties as assigned

Experience, Competencies, and Education

  • Provide leadership to the management of organization-wide change in a complex, multi-location environment
  • Set priorities and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Analyze and redesign business processes
  • Work effectively at all levels of the organization
  • Translate technical issues and alternatives into business and lay terms
  • Communicate effectively, in writing and orally, to individual and group audiences
  • Analyze and resolve complex issues
  • Be a team player that motivates and educates other team members
  • Detect and resolve conflict
  • Motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes
  • Prepare and monitor budgets
  • Negotiate with vendors, contractors and others

These qualifications will typically be the product of at least

  • 10 years of increasing responsibilities for the management and support of information systems, and
  • 4 years of experience in the leadership of an IT organization.
  • B.A. or B.S. and a masters degree preferred

Prior non-profit experience is a plus. The successful candidate will be self-motivating, flexible and innovative.
