Location:                             Washington, DC

Application Deadline:   September 16, 2011

Introduction:

American Bird Conservancy (ABC), an international bird conservation organization, is seeking a dynamic, entrepreneurial leader to manage the ABC “Get the Lead Out” Campaign in its office in Washington, DC.  The Campaign Manager will devise and implement ABC’s new campaign to promote the use of non-toxic, lead-free hunting ammunition and fishing weights.  ABC’s goal is to remove lead from the environment in order to protect people, wildlife, and especially birds.

The Campaign Manager will 1) work with state and federal agencies, game groups, hunt clubs, and other organizations to encourage that hunting or fishing is done with non-toxic ammunition and fishing gear; 2) help launch a communications campaign to raise awareness of this issue; 3) identify, encourage, and use new and better science to support the campaign’s goals; 4) assist in engaging large retailers and work with them to carry more non-toxic options on their shelves; 5) build and expand alliances, especially within the hunting and human health advocacy communities, regarding food safety and contaminated game. This work will include reaching out to Capitol Hill, federal agencies, state governments and NGO partners.  This position is supervised by the Vice President of Conservation Advocacy.

Primary Duties:

  1. Raise awareness of the dangers of lead in ammunition and fishing gear.  The Campaign Manager will work with the Communications Team to launch a communications campaign to raise awareness of the lead issue.
  2. Manage the development of ABC’s lead policy; design and implement ABC’s Get the Lead Out Campaign.  The Campaign Manager will work with ABC staff to evaluate and prioritize issues on lead.
  3. Promote lead-free ammunition with state and federal agencies.  The Campaign Manager will work with partners in state and federal agencies to ensure that any hunting or fishing on public land is done with non-toxic ammunition and fishing gear.  The Manager will engage state agencies which have already established voluntary “get the lead out” campaigns, and encourage them to join ABC in promoting lead-free efforts with other states. Campaign Manager will work with states and agencies to put lead-free regulations into effect.
  4. Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  1.  A minimum of a bachelor’s degree, advanced degree preferred.
  2. At least five years of experience in wildlife advocacy, state agency relations, or campaign management.
  3. Ability to develop creative, energetic advocacy campaigns that produce lasting results.
  4. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to work on multiple campaigns or projects concurrently, and meet deadlines.
  5. Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  6. Experience in working with partnerships, networks, or alliances.
  7. Must be committed to ABC’s conservation mission (see www.abcbirds.org)
  8. The position will be based in ABC’s Washington, DC office.
