Job Description:
The AMC’s Youth Opportunities Program (YOP) provides training and support for more than 250 youth workers in the Northeast region to independently lead youth groups into the outdoors. YOP makes the outdoors accessible to urban and at-risk youth through provision of training, trip planning assistance, reduced rates at AMC facilities, direct service trips, and free use of equipment. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising all aspects of YOP’s Boston based direct service programming for youth including Youth Outdoor Leaders of Boston, the Lowell/Lawrence Summit Project, the Youth Mountain Adventure Project, YOP expansion efforts in New Haven, CT and YOP Local Adventures. All of these projects involve planning and co-leading year-round outdoor programming in partnership with our youth agency partners. The Manager will work closely with these agencies to offer a continuum of activities for youth that will promote leadership and youth development. She will also play a key role in planning for and implementing YOP’s expansion to new communities as part of AMC’s Vision 2020.

The goal of the position is to supervise the provision of powerful outdoor experiences for youth in fun, challenging settings that develop life skills and inspire them to participate in future outdoor adventures. The Manager is responsible for providing program planning support and training that empowers our agency partners to create, and ultimately independently manage, their own outdoor programs. The Manager supervises two full time and two seasonal staff who support these efforts. This position is based in Boston and co-leads trips throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.

This full time, exempt salaried position reports to the Director of the Youth Opportunities Program and offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide the management, supervision, and direction for all of YOP’s Boston based direct service projects, meeting grant objectives and maintaining YOP program standards.
  • Serve a minimum of 3,500 Boston-area youth through YOP direct service programming.
  • Supervise the YOP Trip Leader & Logistics Coordinator, YOP Youth Adventures & Logistics Coordinator, and summer seasonal staff who support YOP’s direct service programming.
  • Conduct outreach and form long term partnerships with new youth organizations and schools.
  • Lead a wide variety of outdoor adventure trips for youth in an organized and effective manner including backpacking, day hiking, camping, canoeing, initiatives, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing.
  • Develop strong collaborative relationships with partnering agencies and their staff. Mentor and support youth workers as they gain outdoor skills and leadership experience.
  • Manage and implement all aspects of trip planning and coordination including agendas, routes, reservations, permits, emergency action plans, menus and food shopping, equipment, curriculum, transportation, and standard trip paperwork such as medical forms, participant lists, and releases.
  • Schedule trips with youth agencies, maintain trip calendar, and create project timeline.
  • Develop curriculum.
  • Ensure youth agency staff are integrated into the YOP community and take advantage of YOP support services including Outdoor Leadership Training, Advanced Skills Workshops, and trip planning assistance.
  • Produce outreach flyers, trip descriptions, and public relations materials. Create program materials describing and advertising outdoor adventure opportunities. Write trip summaries.
  • Conduct information sessions for agency staff, youth, and parents.
  • Recruit, manage, and train volunteers and interns to support the projects.
  • Keep accurate, up-to-date statistics including trips, youth served, facility usage, project expenses, and other data as needed. Compile monthly and year-end reports.
  • Implement AMC risk management procedures at all times. Maintain staff manual for YOP’s youth programs.
  • Collaborate with other YOP staff in program planning and delivery as needed including support for trainings, reservations, equipment, and database management.
  • Manage intern recruitment and hiring for YOP’s Boston office.
  • Manage YOP’s Boston van including maintenance, scheduling, and ensuring AMC and DOT compliance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
