About Statewide Organizing for Community eMpowerment (SOCM)

Statewide Organizing for Community eMpowerment (SOCM) is a member-run, non-profit grassroots organization that encourages civic involvement and collective action so that the people of Tennessee have a greater voice in determining their future. The mission of SOCM is to empower Tennesseans to protect, defend, and improve the quality of life in their communities across the state. SOCM works for social, economic, and environmental justice for all and is committed to the journey of becoming an anti-racist organization and combating social and institutional racism.

Founded in 1972 and initially rooted in coalfield counties in East Tennessee, SOCM has grown into a diverse organization with close to 2,000 members. SOCM chapters organize around local issues and work together through statewide committees on campaigns that address broader issues as well. Over the years SOCM members have organized successful campaigns to address mineral extraction, voting rights, toxics and solid waste, mineral taxation, temporary workers, forestry and aerial spraying issues, and other local and statewide issues. Current campaigns address mountain top removal and surface mining, coal combustion waste and the Kingston Coal Ash disaster, coal liquefaction and gas drilling, fair taxation, green collar jobs, voter empowerment and more.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead Organizer:

1. Lead the Organizing and Leadership Development Team and ensure the overall performance of the team in carrying out the organizing and leadership development goals of SOCM.

2. Oversee and carryout the hiring, orientation, evaluation and professional development of all organizing staff.

3. Provide high quality supervision of organizing staff including performance evaluation, individual workplan development and consulting as needed.

Assistant Director:

1. Assist in the development of strong human resource policies and procedures through participation in the human resources management team and by staffing the Personnel Committee.

2. Assist with the development of communications and messaging pertaining to program work by participating in and contributing to the communications team.

3. Develop and implement leadership development programs that train members and staff to develop organizing skills, critical thinking, and organizational development skills.

4. Assist executive director in proposal writing and foundation contacts, responding to coalition and administrative requests, strategic planning, and other identified administrative needs.

5. Support and implement within all work SOCM's commitment to become an anti-racist organization.

6. Other duties as negotiated and assigned.

Qualifications:

1. A minimum of four years professional experience leading strategic organizing campaigns designed to and with proven results in improving fundamental and important challenges affecting the lives of the constituency organized.

2. A minimum of two years experience supervising paid staff.

3. Commitment to member-led community organizing – Commitment to social, economic, and environmental justice through community organizing; a passion for community organizing work and desire to pursue organizing goals for the long-haul; Deep knowledge of organizing institutions and strategies across faith, labor, and community-based movements.

4. Self-motivated multi-tasker – takes initiative; self-starting; organized; creative; attention to detail; own a car or have daily access to reliable transportation; ability to work independently and cooperatively in teams; demonstrated ability to work with multiple goals and responsibilities, prioritize work effectively, and to build and carry out workplans; continual learning and disciplined self-development.

5. Personable and charismatic leader – empathetic and compassionate; ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds (including race, income-level, age, and ability); integrity; patient; hopeful; positive and encouraging; ability to build trusting, challenging relationships; good communication skills including listening, asking challenging questions, and writing; confident and capable.

6. Flexibility – must be able to travel to different parts of state and region and accommodate a work schedule that includes evening and weekend commitments; ability to adjust work style to diverse needs of members; ability to cope with changing and uncertain circumstances.

7. Commitment to diversity and an understanding of how to work effectively in and with diverse communities, especially low-income communities and communities of color; experience as a facilitator, trainer and designer of participatory workshops with adults; knowledge and experience with popular education methodologies and leadership development training; experience in developing and implementing successful media campaigns; experience in direct communication with voters, including canvassing, tabling and phone banks; experience conducting grassroots fundraising campaigns and writing grant proposals a plus.

8. Ability to use technology to strengthen work product – knowledge of Microsoft Word; familiarity with Apple computers and ability to work in an all-Mac office; Knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint and other software is helpful; experience using listservs to communicate with members; experience using digital cameras to capture event photos or willingness to learn.

9. Experience with large-scale organizational change and ability to proactively seek problem-solving resolutions in an ever-evolving environment.

10. Knowledge of and commitment to SOCM and our work – knowledge of TN politics, regions, issues, people and organizations is desirable; Commitment to attend a mandatory anti-racism workshop and support efforts of organization to implement within all work SOCM's commitment to become an anti-racist organization; knowledge of SOCM's active issue campaigns.

11. Bilingual language skills (English/Spanish preferred) are highly desired.

Compensation

Salary is negotiable based upon relevant experience. The SOCM base salary is $27,000. SOCM offers full family health insurance for all employees that includes vision and dental coverage. Staff is also provided with a work-issued laptop, digital camera, and cell phone/internet stipend when appropriate. Time off includes 15 vacation days per year, 10 holidays (New Year's, MLK, Memorial, 4th of July, Labor Day, 2 days at Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, + 1 personal day) plus business days between Christmas and New Year's when office is closed, 12 sick days, and 5 personal days for growth leave. We have a compensation time policy and a one-month maternity/paternity/family leave policy. SOCM provides sabbaticals after five years, and we offer a pension plan and begin making contributions after two years.
