Job Description: 

The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) is seeking to hire a Sustainable Habitat Program Manager to work with the Director of Land Conservation and conservation officers throughout region. PEC, founded in 1972, is based in Warrenton, Virginia and serves nine counties in Virginia's northern Piedmont area. In partnership with other organizations and state agencies, PEC has been instrumental in the protection of over 336,000 acres of working farms, forests, and open-space in the region.

Areas of Responsibility:

The staff position will be responsible for providing sustainable land management services to landowners, developing and managing a program with the goal of improving wildlife habitat, water quality and the interface between working lands, birds and wildlife throughout the Piedmont. The Program Manager will promote practices such as field mowing management, field-to-forest transition zones, water quality management, creation and maintenance of native species hedgerows, brush piles and other habitat, restoration of waterways for aquatic species, integrated pest management systems, invasive species control, innovative crop rotations and creation of a managed landscape such as pollinator gardens. This position will report to the Director of Land Conservation. Services provided by this position will include:

  • Direct landowner services to create wildlife habitat and management plans specific to the landowner's property and needs. Assisting landowners in researching and accessing available state and/or federal technical assistance, securing reliable contractors and/or cost-share funding to implement conservation practices.
  • Training and education for a wide range of landowners - both new and old - through public workshops, demonstration projects, and partnerships with other conservation agencies and organizations.
  • Professional training for landscape professionals on creation and management of wildlife, bird and fish habitat, and the role of native plants in the designated environment.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. (Masters preferred) or equivalent degree in wildlife conservation, forestry, agriculture, natural resources management, landscape architecture, or similar
  • Technical, field expertise in botany, landscape architecture, wildlife conservation, forest management, and/or agriculture
  • Demonstrated experience directly working with landowners
  • Working knowledge of existing state and federal programs to implement and/or fund sustainable habitats
  • Strong ability to coordinate and manage partner groups and coalitions
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including good attention to detail; Excellent interpersonal skills; Requires minimum supervision
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all types of weather on all types of property
  • Willing to work long hours, including some weekends and evenings.
