The Ohio Environmental Council (OEC) seeks to hire a dynamic, energetic, and effective staff attorney to assist with OEC's Clean Energy and Clean Water litigation and state policy development. The Staff Attorney will be responsible for identifying and implementing cutting-edge solutions to a variety of compelling environmental challenges and opportunities in Ohio and regionally, including negotiating, litigating, advancing policy changes, coalition building and communicating with the press and the public. The Staff Attorney also will be involved with assisting in OEC efforts at the legislature and as well as with Ohio's executive agencies. Basic knowledge of environmental law and trial procedure is essential. The Staff Attorney's primary responsibility will be to assist the Director of Legal Affairs with the development and planning of the OEC's William W. Ellis Ohio Environmental Law Center and its Legal Advocacy, Legal Analysis, and Legal Education efforts. This includes:
The Staff Attorney also will provide legal analysis for the OEC's Clean Energy, Clean Water, and Legislative Affairs program areas and should have a basic understanding of public policy advocacy. The position will involve more than just legal action but also policy development and outreach. Project fundraising responsibilities include researching funding prospects, writing concept papers, proposals, and reports, and ensuring that all grant and other funding deliverables and deadlines are met. Qualifications: The applicant must possess a Juris Doctor from an accredited school of law, along with a license to practice law in the state of Ohio. Prior legal and litigation experience is preferred. Prior experience in public utilities, environmental or natural resources legal issues also is preferred. Additionally, our new hire must be comfortable in a demanding work environment, possess the willingness and ability to occasionally travel and work evening and weekend hours, strong writing and public speaking skills, and strong attention to detail. Good energy and strong self-motivation are critical. Basic familiarity with environmental and energy law and familiarity with Ohio politics is important.
