Job Description: 

The Ohio Environmental Council (OEC) seeks to hire a dynamic, energetic, and effective water policy and outreach staff person to assist with the OEC’s Agricultural & Clean Water programs. The staff person will establish, build, and manage credible and well-respected statewide policy initiatives for the OEC related to water, environmental health, and sustainable agriculture policy.

Through community organizing, the staff person also will work to increase understanding among OEC members, the general public, and relevant groups and organizations about the critical need for progressive environmental policy measures, to raise visibility about the need for progressive legislation and effective regulation among key local, state, and national policy makers. The staff person also will assist with OEC efforts at the legislature and as well as with Ohio’s executive agencies.

Responsibilities

The OEC seeks to hire a unique, ahead-of-the-curve water policy and outreach staff person interested in helping the OEC to advance clean water policy in Ohio through a variety of campaigns.

Programs and projects on which the staff person may direct or provide assistance include:

  • Great Lakes Restoration
  • The Lake Erie Lakewide Management Plan (LAMP) Public Forum
  • Environmental Health
  • Regional Watershed Councils
  • Ohio River Basin protection
  • Sustainable Agriculture

 

Designing and executing policy campaigns around these programs and project will entail:

  • Developing policy campaign messages by creating and promoting position papers and policy statements.
  • Using community organizing, policy, and scientific research to develop progressive environmental policies and campaigns.
  • Developing policy campaign messages by coordinating with the Director of Marketing & Communications and the Senior Director of Legislative & Public Affairs in developing campaign materials – including fact sheets, brochures, position papers, policy statements, and web page updates.
  • Using a wide range of outreach strategies, including mail, email, web sites, YouTube and other social networking tools, action alerts, phone, and events to reach activists, recruit volunteers, organize public events and workshops, and give presentations.
  • Contacting and building relationships with community groups to allow assessment of their needs and development of tools, resources, and strategies that will activate these groups at the local, state, and federal levels.
  • Responding to the needs of, and provide support to, OEC members and others seeking the OEC’s policy expertise.
  • Coordinating with the Senior Director of Legislative & Public Affairs and Director of Marketing & Communications to leverage media for campaigns and advocacy projects- using press releases, newsletter articles, and press events.
  • Assisting with grantseeking, including researching funding prospects, writing concept papers, proposals, and reports, and ensuring that all grant and other funding deliverables and deadlines are met.

 

Qualifications: The applicant must possess an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university. Completion of a postgraduate degree or equivalent work experience is preferred. Applicants should have a strong interest in environmental issues, along with prior coursework or work experience in political science, public administration, environmental science, public health or a similar field. Knowledge of the historical and current political landscape in Ohio is preferred.

Additionally, our new hire must be comfortable in a demanding work environment; and possess the willingness and ability to occasionally travel and work evening and weekend hours, strong writing and public speaking skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work independently.
