Job Description: 

RMI is seeking a senior-level hire to help write and edit RMI’s published materials.  This person will have extensive experience (10+ years) writing, especially for technical and/or business audiences.  She/he will be responsible for coaching RMI staff in their writing and for ensuring that materials under the RMI brand excel in clarity, grace, purpose, precision, and appeal.  This person will work out of our Snowmass office and will be joining a Marketing and Communications team with another writer / editor in our Boulder office.  These two writer/editors will partner closely to meet the Institute’s needs.  This position offers the opportunity to collaborate and work with numerous RMI staff including Amory Lovins, RMI’s Chairman and Chief Scientist.

RMI has offices in Boulder and Snowmass, Colorado. This position is located in Snowmass and reports to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Makes RMI as admired for its writing as for its content
  • Writes and edits material for all RMI needs
  • Manages editorial content for Solutions Journal print editions, annual report, various marketing and branding pieces
  • Edits various works for research and consulting (our initiative work), white papers, semi-technical and some technical articles, Development communications, etc.
  • Coaches staff on writing, both on specific products and through regular clinics
  • Contributes to overall Communications strategy
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • An intense drive to produce top-quality written products and to help permeate that commitment and skill throughout RMI’s culture
  • Bachelor’s Degree or more, ideally liberal-arts
  • 10+ years’ experience as writer / editor, including extensive experience writing for business and technical audiences
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills from document structure to grammatical precision
  • Meticulous attention to detail: do it once, do it right, but keep it fresh and creative
  • Experience writing on energy-related issues preferred
  • Languages (hence sensitivity to what will or won’t translate well) desirable
  • Working knowledge of editorial styles
  • Experience integrating the editorial and production processes
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong initiative and follow-through, workflow, and project management skills
  • A strong team player with excellent interpersonal / collaborative skills with staff at all organizational levels
  • Intense curiosity and passion for RMI’s mission
  • Experience writing copy for marketing collateral a plus
