Job Description: 

Founded in 1971 and based in San Francisco, NatureBridge is the largest residential environmental education partner of the National Park Service. Its mission is to inspire personal connections to the natural world and responsible actions to sustain it. NatureBridge currently operates in four national parks, Yosemite National Park, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Olympic National Park, and Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Each year, NatureBridge serves more than 40,000 participants through residential field science, youth leadership, and teacher training programs. NatureBridge is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Position Summary

NatureBridge is seeking an experienced self-starter who will play a seminal role in the development and implementation of NatureBridge's Southern California individual donor program. S/he will work to garner support for education programs in the breathtaking Santa Monica Mountains and Channel Islands. NatureBridge has the potential to serve over 10,000 students per year in Southern California and the Southern California Individual Giving Officer will be critical in helping reach our goal.

This position will serve as an important point of contact for NatureBridge's Santa Monica Mountains Advisory Board and senior leadership team to grow the organization's Southern California donor base. They will also work in partnership with the NatureBridge-wide development department to build and implement an organization-wide corporate engagement strategy.

The Southern California Individual Giving Officer manages all aspects of the major giving and annual giving programs including fundraising events, appeals, and other campaigns. The Southern California Individual Giving Officer will build upon past achievements to meet funding goals by taking full advantage of the increasing funding opportunities with individuals and corporations committed to outdoor experiential education. The position requires an entrepreneurial, detail-oriented strategic thinker eager to contribute and excel in a dynamic work environment.

The Southern California Individual Giving Officer partners closely with NatureBridge's Southern California grant-writing consultant and the Southern California Director and Advisory Board. S/he reports to the San Francisco-based Director of Development.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include working with the development team to accomplish the goals and objectives of the position, including creating and implementing a regional individual donor fundraising plan for Southern California. Duties include (but are not limited to) the following:

Major Giving (40%)

Manage donor prospect portfolios for Advisory Board and senior leadership team members
Generate major donor prospects for Advisory Board and senior leadership team portfolios through activities including donor database screening, extensive donor research, and generation of referrals from existing staff, supporters, and Board members
Prepare regular reports: gift activity, new gifts, pledges, proposals outstanding, completed visits, etc.
Assist in preparations for donor meetings, capture meeting information in database, and engage in follow-up actions
Annual Giving (20%)

Support NatureBridge-wide bi-annual appeal processes including regional content generation, list generation, mailing, and analysis
Coordinate donor cultivation activities including meetings, events, mailings, e-mail, and social media campaigns
Prepare regular reports: campaign metrics, gift activity, new gifts, completed strategies, etc.
Corporate Engagement (20%)

Partner with Development Director, Grants Manager and fundraising contractors to build and implement NatureBridge-wide corporate engagement programs
Lead corporate engagement efforts in partnership with grants team
Event Planning and Execution (10%)

Plan and execute quarterly donor cultivation events such as house parties, campus tours, and corporate volunteer opportunities, including generating and sending invitations, tracking responses, and tracking event budgets
Plan and execute one annual fundraising event
Support NatureBridge-wide fundraising events including spring 2012 40th anniversary event in San Francisco
Other (10%)

Staff liaison to Advisory Board and its development committee
Create and manage annual development plan, quarterly workplans, and annual contributed revenue projections and budgets
Attend all department and team meetings
Other duties as assigned
Experience, Competencies, and Education

The ideal candidate must be an entrepreneurial problem solver, comfortable with ambiguity and thinking on their feet, have a proven ability to manage details without losing track of the big picture, and demonstrate the following:

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university, three to five years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience completing extensive and detailed donor prospect research and evaluation, knowledge of Southern California donor base preferred
Experience leading the planning and implementation of donor cultivation and fundraising events including setting goals, implementing strategies, managing teams, and delivering results
Proven project management skills, including successful management of complex multi-faceted appeals and events with cross-departmental team members
Ability to work independently or as part of a team and to deal with a dynamic and changing work environment
Demonstrated ability to handle multiple time-sensitive tasks simultaneously with precision and grace
Proven ability to organize, prioritize, and efficiently complete varied tasks
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, a can-do attitude, and a high degree of initiative
Excellent writing skills and a proven ability to create compelling written communications that inspire donors and prospects to action
Keen attention to detail plus solid analytic and problem-solving skills
Demonstrated high level of competency with Microsoft Office software including advanced features
Experience with online giving systems and permission-based email systems for appeals and donor cultivation
Experience using Raisers Edge database preferred
A positive attitude and sense of humor
Flexibility to work occasional weekends and evenings
