The Fenner Conservancy, a 501(c)3 organization, seeks a part-time Bookkeeper to implement Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) at Fenner Nature Center and the Explore Store. The right candidate will have a solid understanding of accounting, business management, and inventory maintenance, and will communicate well with upper level management and office staff to improve accounting processes. The successful candidate will also have excellent computer, office, and organizational skills, and be able to work in close partnership with the Program Manager, Gift Shop Manager, Treasurer and Executive Director. The successful candidate will be able to work in a gift shop environment at Fenner Nature Center. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES • Maintain a log in Excel of all the income and expenses received for Fenner Conservancy and the Explore Store by date (two separate logs). The Bookkeeper provides a copy of the income/expense log to the Executive Director, Program Manager, Gift Shop Manager and Treasurer each week. • Enter all nature center related bills and income into the Fenner Conservancy QuickBooks company file. • Enter all gift shop related bills and income into the Explore Store QuickBooks company file. • Sign the Fenner Conservancy checks and put them in the Treasurer drawer for the second signature. • Sign the Explore Store checks and put them in the Gift Shop drawer for the second signature. • Prepare checks for deposit. • Deposit the Fenner Conservancy and Explore Store income at MSUFCU (two separate accounts). • Communicate regularly with the Treasurer, Executive Director, Program Manager and Gift Shop Manager by e-mail and/or telephone. • Reconcile the monthly Fenner Conservancy and Explore Store bank statements. • Provide the Executive Director and Treasurer with monthly reports and other information when requested. • Additional Bookkeeper assistance will be needed for festivals and major events to assist prior to, during, and after with cash boxes and accounting (Maple Syrup Festival and Apple Butter Festival, possibly other events in future). • The Bookkeeper will work with the Gift Shop Manager on gift shop inventory set-up and maintenance. QUALIFICATIONS • High school diploma or GED. • At least one (2) year of college-level course work in accounting, business management, or related fields. • Required education, experience, or a combination of education and experience includes, but is not limited to: the use of a personal computer with QuickBooks software and Microsoft Office Professional software including Word, Excel, Access and Power Point. • Previous experience managing income and expense records and communicating with individuals involved in the bookkeeping process. • The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate their experience, trust and excellent communication skills both oral and written. • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). • Knowledge of general office procedures and policies. • Knowledge of inventory management and maintenance desired. • Skill in the use of various pieces of office equipment. • Ability to develop instructional documents related to bookkeeping procedures. • Ability to write checks, make deposits and create invoices.• Ability to draft professional letters in response to communication from the Michigan Department of Treasury and Internal Revenue Service. • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. • Ability to work independently and flexibly, and still meet tight deadlines. Pay Rate: $10.00-$12.00 per hour depending upon experience.
