The Senior Vice of City Park Development will play an essential role in the promotion, development and coordination of the strategy and operations for TPL's work in cities nationwide. S/he will, among other things, (1) promote TPL's existing urban programs and the advancement for new urban programs in other cities; (2) educate the public and America's leaders on the current number of parks, the need for more parks, and all the benefits that flow as a result of urban park development and utilization; (3) cultivate ongoing support and visibility for TPL's efforts and leadership within the larger fundraising, community development and policy arenas; and (4) establish operating practices and procedures across all TPL offices for diverse, sustainable urban park programs. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this position supervises The Center for City Parks Excellence, TPL's thought leadership group on the urban parks issues and works in collaboration with TPL's state offices and TPL's conservation services staff to inspire and coordinate the on-the-ground park and conservation activities. Frequent travel and a flexible schedule are necessary. Essential Functions Strategic Development: The Senior Vice of City Park Development will analyze and audit TPL's work in cities to improve practices, identify new opportunities and strengthen strategies. S/he will provide guidance in how to create financially sustainable urban programs in all cities where TPL has on-going or planned urban programs. To the extent necessary in given cities, the SVP will assist the local TPL office in generating greater community involvement and financial support and/or developing a long-term strategic plan for park development and enhancement. To the extent new opportunities arise or are developed, s/he will assess those opportunities. Initial focus for expansion will be on those cities that have an existing TPL presence but no urban program. The SVP will analyze the possibility of expanding current successful TPL urban programs to new cities. In all such cases, TPL's prior expertise, experience and track record of success in urban park design and development should be utilized in those additional/new markets. To achieve these objectives, the candidate must be able to (a) help develop diverse strategic plans at both a national and local level: (b) provide the necessary leadership and management to initiate such programs; and (c) raise TPL's profile through external outreach, such as networking and negotiating partnerships with governments, government agencies, corporations and non-profit organizations. Reporting into the Chief Operating Officer, this position supervises The Center for City Parks Leadership and Management The Senior Vice of City Park Development will play an active leadership role in the creation of new urban programs at the national, regional, state and local level, and work with TPL executives to coordinate program integration at every level across the country. S/he will work closely with governmental leaders and funding sources; corporate and civic leaders; national TPL teams (with expertise in park assessment, community visioning, the creation of successful conservation financing measures, and philanthropy); and the local TPL offices. In addition to serving as a catalyst for new park development and/or enhancement of existing parks, this person shall provide leadership once the program has been created, in those areas where the candidate has prior experience and technical expertise, such as program design, management and/or project/portfolio development The Senior Vice of City Park Development will identify improved ways to leverage the full range of TPL staff in areas such as coordinating with government agencies, raising funds, capturing community and stakeholder input, conducting public outreach, projecting costs, managing risk, and working with other constituencies. S/he will assist in the dissemination and implementation of information on best practices both internally and externally, including the internal documentation and the external communication of TPL's work with parks, playgrounds and community gardens. External Outreach & Internal Communication A key responsibility for the Senior Vice of City Park Development will be to work externally to advance the work of TPL broadly. S/he will be the face of TPL's work in cities and be the primary promoter of TPL's skills and services to urban park constituencies at relevant meetings/conferences, federal and state lawmakers and policy leaders, and various media sources. S/he will continue to build TPL's reputation as a national leader in urban park creation and development. This candidate would work closely with TPL's Federal Affairs office in Washington, with TPL's inhouse economist, and with TPL's local leaders to obtain governmental financial assistance. Working with TPL's Chief Philanthropy Officer, S/he will develop a national multi-year fundraising plan for major individual donors, corporations and foundations-a fundraising plan that considers the priority funding needs of local park initiatives in cities and/or specific communities. With the help of local, regional and national fundraising staff, SVP will work to secure funding for existing urban parks programs and build capacity for future programs. The candidate will coordinate with Marketing to develop effective marketing strategies and marketing tools while assisting with media outreach under guidance of its staff. Ideally, the SVP will help promote TPL's expertise and further its reputation as the "go to" organization on urban parks issues. Qualifications The successful candidate will bring 10-15+ years of experience in a related field, such as urban program development, funding and/or maintenance. Experience leading an urban body, agency or department (such as Mayor, Department of Transportation, Department of Parks and Recreation) or with federal/state governmental bodies and agencies involved in urban park development (such as Department of Commerce, Department of Transportation, or Department of the Interior) is preferred.
