June 1 - August 31, 2011 North Cascades Institute seeks qualified, enthusiastic individuals to become Skagit Tour Guides and part of our education team. Based out of the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center in North Cascades National Park (Diablo, Washington), Guides will primarily be responsible for implementing Skagit Tours, a partnership program with Seattle City Light and North Cascades National Park, comprised of boat and field tours. They will teach a diverse audience about the history of the Skagit Hydroelectric Project, as well as the natural and cultural history of North Cascades National Park while boating on Diablo Lake in the Alice Ross III or visiting points of interest along the North Cascades Highway corridor in a tour vehicle.
North Cascades Institute also provides incredible experiential programs to adults and families at the Environmental Learning Center on Diablo Lake. Participants experience Northwest ecosystems through art, photography, literature, natural and cultural history appreciation, recreational activities and other programs. Guides will also serve as instructional staff for these programs and will be involved in planning, physical set-up and breakdown, and program logistics.
Qualifications - Bachelor's degree, preferably in Environmental Education, Environmental Science, History, Education, Biology, Ecology or related field - Enthusiasm for learning and teaching about cultural history and the natural world - Experience teaching adults, families and other audiences, preferably in an environmental education setting - Must be creative, energetic, flexible, motivated and professional - Must possess a sense of humor and enjoy working as a cooperative team player - Must be willing to work full days and evenings; working all weekends in July and August will be required - Ability to work and live comfortably in a small community - Current Wilderness First Responder certification strongly recommended - A criminal history and background check - Ability to lift 50 pounds - Ability to hike over varied elevation and terrain for extended periods - Current valid driver's license - Driving record for the past three years with no moving violations - Experience driving 15 passenger vans/buses a plus
Responsibilities 90% time - Serve as primary instructional staff for Skagit Tours, teaching natural and cultural history and Skagit Hydroelectric Project history to diverse audiences - Provide leadership in risk management before, during and after classes (e.g., respond to emergencies, administer first aid, maintain medical kits, complete incident reports) - Manage program logistics including driving participants in 15 passenger vans/buses - Assist for or teach natural and cultural history or other lessons during classes and evening programs for various ages - Lead hikes and canoeing for groups - Create and maintain program educational materials, including coordinating educational equipment (e.g., field guides, binoculars, etc.) and helping participants use them during classes
10% time - Represent the Institute during classes by sharing publicity information and promoting future courses, membership and involvement - Participate in Institute team meetings (e.g., program, risk management) - Other duties as assigned by supervisor or Program Director
Compensation $1500 per month, plus training, shared housing and meals when programs are in session.
Housing is provided and all Seasonal Naturalists are required to reside in staff housing during the duration of the position. Pets and smoking are not allowed in the program, housing, or any Environmental Learning Center facilities.
