Job Description: 

The Norman Bird Sanctuary, located in Middletown, Rhode Island, is seeking committed and enthusiastic
Summer Teacher/Naturalists for camp programs. Teacher/Naturalists lead groups of up to 16 campers entering
grades Pre-K to 12; develop, plan and teach a variety of hands-on nature based camp activities; oversee camper
health and safety; communicate effectively with staff and parents; and supervise high school Junior Counselors.
Camp programs are held from June 27
th
- August 19
th
.
Positions available for a variety of camp programs including:
Fledglings Ages 3-4 M-F 8 a.m-12:30 p.m.
Chickadees Ages 4-6 M-F 8 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Nature Day Grades K-4 M-F 8 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.
Explorers Grades 4-6 M-T, Th-F 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. W 2:30 p.m- 9:30 p.m.
Field Explorers Grades 5-7 M-T, Th-F 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. W 2:30 p.m- 9:30 p.m.
RI Adventures Grades 6-8 M-F 8 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.
High School Service Grades 9-12 M-F 8 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be at least 18 years old; have a bachelor's degree or coursework towards a
college degree; have knowledge or a strong interest in the natural sciences; have experience working with children
in a responsible and professional setting; and demonstrate strong communication skills. All staff members must
pass national and state background checks. Preference will be given to applicants that possess CPR and First Aid
Certifications valid through August 19
th
2011.
Lead Teachers are generally college graduates with significant teaching or environmental experience; Co-teachers
must be high school graduates or college students with a passion for teaching others about the natural world. Lead
teachers applying for travel camp positions must obtain a Chauffer's License.
COMPENSATION: $7.75-10/hour based upon experience and position. Contract runs June 20-August 19, hours
are dependent upon camp programming (includes one full week of staff training).
