The Science Coordinator is based at the Environmental Learning Center in North Cascades National Park (Diablo, Washington) and is an environmental educator and field researcher. This position serves to strengthen Institute programs by enhancing field-teaching opportunities that integrate science and research in creative and effective ways. In addition, this position is a master teacher among the Learning Center community by developing, instructing and evaluating lessons in natural and cultural history, science and other subjects for wide-ranging audiences (children and adults), including the Institute's graduate program in partnership with Western Washington University. The Science Coordinator provides leadership and support for Learning Center and Field programs.
Supervised by the Program Director, this is a full-time, exempt position with occasional responsibility for overnight supervision of the Learning Center campus. This position has the responsibility to apply good judgment and discretion, particularly for the welfare and safety of all program participants.
Qualifications - Master's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Education or related field - Enthusiasm for and experience in learning and teaching about the natural world; a minimum of two years of environmental education or natural history interpretation experience required - Field research experience including data collection and analysis; prefer a minimum of 2 years with some work in the Pacific Northwest - Excellent communication skills - Commitment to "citizen science" and the ethic of environmental volunteering - Must be creative, energetic, flexible, motivated and professional - Must possess a sense of humor and enjoy working as a cooperative team player - Must be willing to work full days and evenings; weekend work will be required - Ability to work and live comfortably in a small community in a remote location - Current Wilderness First Responder certification required - A criminal history disclosure and background check required - Possession of a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past 3 years required - Ability to lift 50 pounds - Ability to hike over varied elevation and terrain for extended periods - Experience training seasonal staff and/or volunteers a plus
Responsibilities - Incorporates science, research, data collection, citizen science and stewardship components into programs, including Mountain School, Seminars/Retreats, Graduate Program, Base Camp, and other Learning Center and Field programs, in collaboration with the Curriculum Coordinator, other Institute staff and partners. - Serves as a senior naturalist in teaching and leading programs and mentoring staff, graduate students and interns. Provides leadership as an on-site coordinator and/or instructor for Learning Center programs as assigned. - Acts as a bridge for disseminating information from Pacific Northwest research to staff, graduate students and program participants. - Assists Curriculum Coordinator and program team in developing and evaluating lessons/programs in natural and cultural history, science and other subjects. - Supports the graduate program with instruction, mentorship and evaluation of graduate students, including scientific principles and related teaching techniques in the classroom and the field. - Creates or oversees the creation of educational/interpretive materials for displays and classrooms as needed. - Collaborates with partners to develop appropriate research and field study opportunities for programs. - Trains and coordinates staff, graduate students, volunteers, interns and others in research protocols and stewardship projects at the Learning Center. - Leads data collection and/or research in natural and cultural history, science and other subjects/projects to enhance science components of programs; evaluates student and program participant data and communicates results. - Develops protocol for and maintains biological inventory, phenology data, and other records and specimens. - Works with National Park Service resource managers and Program Coordinator to obtain educational field study and research permits.
Compensation, Benefits and Housing This is a regular, full-time, exempt position. We offer a competitive compensation package; benefits include paid time off, medical/dental insurance and tax-defined annuity and contribution retirement plans. On-campus shared housing may be available along with on-call responsibilities. Pets are not allowed. Smoking is not allowed on campus, in housing or during programs.
