Job Description: 

The Wilderness Society seeks a highly creative and skilled individual to join the core staff of the Wilderness Support Center to play a lead role in and provide national support to a campaign to defend the Antiquities Act and to create a public demand for designating new National Monuments throughout the country. In addition, this individual will focus on developing and implementing strategies to build even greater political support locally and nationally for protecting ecological, cultural and historically significant public lands. More specifically, this position will play a lead role within a coalition of national organizations focused on the Antiquities Act while ensuring all national monument campaigns are well coordinated with The Wilderness Society's regional offices and priority designation campaigns. Furthermore, this position will co-lead the coalition's field component of the campaign and will assist coalition partners with developing and implementing plans to garner new support for use of the Antiquities Act on Capitol Hill and with appropriate federal land managing agencies. Lastly, this position will serve as the conduit between local place-based grassroots campaigns to designate national monuments and the national effort focused on decision and policy makers in Washington, DC.

This person will serve as a key member of a dynamic, creative, and skilled team of Wilderness Society staff (both in Durango and throughout the organization), along with key coalition partners, working to achieve new conservation designations.

PRIORITY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serve as a multi-faceted leader for TWS on the campaign to designate national monuments. Provide campaign leadership and guidance to a coalition of groups and TWS staff engaged in the campaign including, co-leading the field component of the national campaign and developing and implementing national and local campaign plans focused on building grassroots support for national monuments. In addition, work with appropriate TWS staff and coalition partners on developing and implementing strategic communications, fieldwork and lobbying plans intended to defend the Antiquities Act, encourage the administration to utilize the act and debunk myths and factual inaccuracies surrounding the Antiquities Act.
Coordinate and facilitate an internal TWS team including National Conservation Lands staff focused on defending the Antiquities Act, new national monument designations and additions to the National Landscape Conservation.
Work closely with the Center staff to ensure that the organization's resources are effectively and strategically deployed to defend the Antiquities Act and support national monument designation campaigns.
Inform and educate appropriate government personnel, Congressional staff, and legislators at the local, state and federal level on priority national monument campaign issues.
Develop and implement plans to increase awareness of and defend the Antiquities Act with key elected officials and land managing agencies including but not limited to engaging strategically important congressional caucuses, congressional briefings and organizing events for new members of congress.
Assist coalition partners, Wilderness Support Center and other Wilderness Society regional efforts with organizing and implementing local and Washington, DC-based special events focused on building support for the use of the Antiquities Act.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge & Skills:

At least five years experience working on grassroots campaigns, preferably in the conservation movement.
Possess strong leadership skills with a proven ability to lead multi-faceted and dynamic coalitions.
Strong knowledge of public land issues and conservation policy.
Experience working with elected officials and a solid understanding of the legislative process, preferably at the federal level.
A personal commitment to protecting America's natural and cultural heritage.
Excellent negotiation skills and ability to work with a wide array of individuals.
Experience working successfully with the media and an understanding of how to utilize opportunities in a strategic manner.
Proven public speaking skills as well as excellent writing and editing skills.
Ability and willingness to travel on an as-needed basis as well as willingness to work nights and weekends when needed.
Proficient computer skills; knowledge and experience with word processing (MS Word), database and communications software.
Bachelor's degree, or its demonstrated equivalent, required. Relevant graduate work will be highly regarded.
