Job Description:

Montana boasts some of the most remarkable wild landscapes in the lower 48 states - including significant portions of the Crown of the Continent ecosystem, one of the most biologically diverse landscapes in North America. Despite a history of natural resource extraction, exciting opportunities exist to protect the remaining roadless forests and restore damaged forests and streams. We are searching for a skilled and enthusiastic individual who can help implement an exciting new collaborative forest restoration program in the Southwestern Crown of the Continent.
The Forest Restoration Associate will work with the Forest Program Director, Forest Ecologist, Senior Resource Economist, and Communications Manager to help represent The Wilderness Society's interests in the Southwestern Crown Collaborative and other forest restoration initiatives. The Associate will help facilitate on-the-ground restoration, monitoring and adaptive management on National Forest System lands through the recently funded Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program and other efforts. The Associate will work within the SW Crown Collaborative to identify and pursue strategies for conserving and restoring federal, state and private land within the Southwestern Crown landscape. Success will require collaborative work with other conservation organizations, hunters and anglers, industry, members of Congress, state and federal agencies and Tribes. To that end, the Forest Restoration Associate must play a pivotal role in supporting not just restoration efforts, but our relationships with our partners.

Responsibilities

Work with the Southwestern Crown of the Continent Collaborative (SWCC) to coordinate communications and ensure the implementation of restoration, monitoring, reporting, and adaptive management efforts through this initiative.
Support the Northern Rockies Forest Team in their development and implementation of a science-based program that results in wilderness protection, strong stewardship prescriptions by the Forest Service, and new, innovative restoration projects that improve the ecological health of the land.
Consistent with The Wilderness Society's Stewardship and Restoration Program and Restoration Campaign, work closely with other TWS staff and partners to develop a unified approach to land protection and restoration work in the Southwestern Crown of the Continent and nationally.
Help ensure that all TWS forest restoration initiatives and approaches are based on a foundation of sound science.
Develop and maintain strong working relationships with Forest Service personnel, state wildlife agencies, tribes, and other organizations.
Work alongside TWS communications staff to organize media opportunities/events that message positive benefits of forest restoration.
Assist with proposal writing and other fundraising efforts as needed.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate has:

Masters degree in natural resource management or policy with a minimum of two years professional experience in a related field or a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of five years relevant work experience.
Professional experience working on public land issues in the Crown of the Continent.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate a wide range of interests including local citizens and stakeholders, conservation organizations, Tribes, federal, state, and/or local agencies throughout the Southwestern Crown of the Continent.
Demonstrated ability to communicate with diverse interests in an effective manner.
Must be enthusiastic, highly motivated, a self starter, and able to effectively manage multiple demands and deadlines.
Must have a broad view of conservation issues and have demonstrated the ability to think and act strategically to achieve conservation goals.
Demonstration of strong organizational skills.
Knowledge of National Forest management policies, especially the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program.
Excellent analytical and communication skills, ability to write and speak concisely and persuasively, and competent in typing and personal computer skills.
Strong commitment to The Wilderness Society's mission.
We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, including health and dental insurance and a pension plan. At TWS, we advocate for and protect the rich variety of life, values and experiences that wild places provide; as an organization we are equally committed to honoring diversity in our staff and creating an inclusive work environment.
