Land conservation is a rapidly growing, multi-disciplinary field in the environmental arena. It plays a central role in addressing myriad issues, including landscape level ecosystem protection, water resource protection, wildlife and waterfowl habitat conservation, recreational and scenic use, land use planning, agricultural preservation, and climate change. Land conservation is driven primarily by land trusts, which are community-based non-profit organizations dedicated to the protection of America's natural heritage. The conservation manager position offers an exciting opportunity to play a leadership role in the land conservation community of the West. The successful candidate will demonstrate a proven track record in building and sustaining close, working relationships with diverse stakeholders in the context of complex western environmental and land use issues. The position is primarily responsible for developing, managing and delivering Alliance capacity building and organizational advancement programs to build strong western land trusts and enhance their capacity to achieve their missions more effectively. She/he will be responsible for the delivery and evaluation of a suite of tools and resources to land trusts, such as guided organizational assessments, training and mentoring programs, one-on-one technical coaching and assistance, and accreditation preparation services. She/he will strategically deploy a cadre of consultants to bring a high level of expertise in specific areas such areas as strategic planning, fundraising, and strategic conservation planning. The conservation manager also plays an important role in building and maintaining effective partnerships with state and regional associations of land trusts and/or landscape level collaborations to advance our mutual goals. In addition, she/he will work closely with other Alliance staff on issue-specific project teams. The full-time position requires 37.5 hours per week with frequent travel, including some weekends. He/she is supervised by the Western Director.
Responsibilities: * Organizational Development: Develop and implement training and assistance programs at various levels of organizational growth to help land trusts and their leaders build stronger organizations. This includes providing one-on-one assessments and technical assistance for land trust staff and boards of directors, providing leadership training and support, and making recommendations about organizational development and transaction issues based on the Land Trust Standards and Practices;
Qualifications and Attributes: * A minimum of five years experience working with nonprofit organizations, preferably in the land trust community.
