Job Description: 

The Wilderness Society is a national non-profit membership organization that has been devoted to the conservation of wilderness and public lands for more than 70 years. Today, TWS is one of the most effective and respected national organization working on wildland protection - one with strong national and regional presence and a reputation for effective advocacy and public education based on sound science and analysis.

The Wilderness Society seeks a highly creative and skilled individual to join the staff of its southern Appalachian office to provide full time support for local conservation campaigns while developing and implementing strategies to broaden political support for protecting wilderness. The position will assist in developing and implementing grassroots campaigns that protect wilderness and adjacent landscapes, and provide support for local wilderness movement-building activities.

This person will serve as a key member of a dynamic, creative, and skilled team of Wilderness Society staff along with key coalition partners, working to achieve new wilderness and other conservation designations.
Priority Responsibilities

* Build diverse support and endorsements for wilderness and other legislative protection of North Carolina's Mountain Treasures.
* Provide critical outreach during forest plan revision process for Nantahala-Pisgah National Forest.
* Build support for increased funding for Land and Water Conservation Fund and Forest Legacy programs for priority acquisition projects in NC.
* Develop strategic messaging and communications campaigns that work with North Carolina audiences and provide training and tools to help local partners to carry those messages.
* Assist director in building local capacity by providing key leadership, expertise and training to our local partners as they engage in land acquisition strategies, legislative campaigns for special areas protection, national forest planning process, and in the federal policy arena.

Qualifications

* BA degree or equivalent experience is required; MA or MS is preferred.
* Highly motivated self-starter with a proven ability to manage multiple demands and deadlines and work independently
* Proven public speaking skills as well as excellent writing and editing skills.
* Proven ability to work constructively with a wide range of interests including rural community leaders, industrial forestry interests, hunters, anglers, tribal leaders, local elected officials, local, state, and federal land managers and conservation organizations
* Ability to travel frequently and perform some evening and weekend work
* Ability to lead physically demanding outings and hikes into remote locations
* At least 1 to 3 years of outreach and organizing experience in the environmental field
* Familiarity with the western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee region, its people and their values
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access
