The Major Gift Officer is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gift prospects, including planned gifts. Responsibilities include prospect identification, prospect tracking, cultivation and solicitation procedures, direct solicitations, proposal writing and development, and major donor gift recognition. This position reports to the Associate Director of Major Gifts and is responsible for all designated major donors, related campaigns and activities, and volunteers. This position is focused on managing relationships with donors in the Greater Los Angeles area and Santa Barbara who can support local, statewide, and nationwide initiatives.
Essential Functions:
85% Major Donor Program: identifies potential individual donors, develops cultivation and solicitation plans, implements and maintains donor tracking system, makes direct solicitations, writes and develops proposals and case statements, and coordinates and implements major donor recognition.
5% With Director of Planned Giving: identifies potential planned gift donors, develops cultivation and solicitation procedures, implements and maintains planned gift tracking system, makes direct solicitations, writes and develops proposals and coordinates and implements planned giving recognition.
10% General Administration / Other duties as required
Other Responsibilities:
* Manages donor portfolio of 125-150 individuals * Maintains an active schedule of solicitations, cultivation visits, events, and stewardship activities * Identifies new prospective donors * Develops long-range plans for donor involvement * Maintains an active, current body of knowledge pertaining to a growing constituency of current and prospective donors and volunteers * Facilitates relationships between potential and current donors and members of the TPL's staff and volunteers * Coordinates the nature and number of contacts that assigned prospects receive * Involves and informs staff as solicitation and cultivation activities warrant * Engages in best practices (i.e., creating written solicitation strategies, documenting actions and information through the efficient use of TPL's development database, participating in prospect reviews, sharing pertinent information with volunteers, use of appreciative inquiry). * Ensures close coordination and integration with other development staff (DDDs, MGOs, State Development Directors, Institutional Giving Directors as appropriate) within the MGO's division * Fosters and maintains productive relationships with staff across TPL * Trains and mentors other development staff and volunteers in fundraising practices and techniques * Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor
Qualifications:
* 4-6 years of development experience * Major Gift Experience: o Demonstrated initiative and achievement in major gift fundraising o Ability to strategize large gift solicitations * General Development Principles Knowledge: o Expertise in the methodologies of giving, including being able to market planned gifts o Experience with best practices including the efficient use of database system, including prospect tracking, a willingness to strengthen strategies through prospect review and an openness to share development techniques while learning TPL's system of best practices * Planning and Organizational Skills: o Willingness to accept initiative liaison and special project assignments, and the ability to represent all of TPL's gift opportunities and their priorities to prospects effectively and equitably o Flexibility is required as priorities and circumstances dictate * Communication, Teamwork, and Management Skills: o Outstanding verbal and written communication skills along with exceptional interpersonal and organizational abilities o Exceptional ability to organize and motivate others, including TPL administration, staff, peers, and volunteers. Including experience training and mentoring other development staff and volunteers in fundraising practices and techniques o The ability to function effectively as a member of a team, and a willingness to participate in activities and assignments that will benefit other members of the team or will contribute to the accomplishment of team objectives o Ability to exercise good judgment, take initiative and make recommendations in resolving problems and provide guidance to other staff. o Perseverance, a high energy level, patience, imagination, humor and creativity. * Interest in and commitment to TPL's Mission * Knowledge of relevant funders desirable * Bachelor's degree or equivalent required * Willingness to travel
