Job Description: 

EarthCorps' mission is to build global community through local environmental service. EarthCorps restores parks and open spaces while providing leadership and community service experiences for young people from the United States and around the world. EarthCorps runs more than 300 volunteer events year round to complete local community-based restoration and build stewardship capacity within the greater community.

• Healthy Habitats: EarthCorps' environmental restoration work includes native plantings, invasive plant removal, salmon stream restoration, wetland and shoreline restoration, and trail construction.
• Young Leaders: In addition to the Corps Program, EarthCorps delivers programs for young people to learn about the environment, engage in community service and develop leadership skills through hands-on service.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The crew leader (CL) position is a training-level, seasonal position with EarthCorps. The CL position involves project coordination between EarthCorps project managers, the Field Operations Director, and their crew; facilitation of crew safety and well-being, productivity, morale and quality of work; corpsmember training and education in the field; and responsibility for maintaining the objectives of EarthCorps in all endeavors. The position reports to the program manager who will also serve as advisor to the crew leaders and their crews. EarthCorps crews will be comprised of 6 to 7 corpsmembers and a crew leader. Corpsmembers may be international or U.S. AmeriCorps participants. Some U.S. crew leader applicants will enroll in AmeriCorps and must abide by AmeriCorps policies and complete 1,700 hours of service. The position is designed with co-leading for the first half of the program and solo leading for the second half.

This position is primarily in the field, in all weather conditions and requires participants to be very physical. Work regularly involves hiking, heavy lifting, and repetitive motions. This includes lifting up to 50 pounds (22.5 kg) and hiking up to 8 miles (13 km) while carrying 40 pounds (18 kg) of weight for up to 9 hours per day. Tasks may include invasive plant removal, native plant installation, trail construction/maintenance, camping outdoors for up to 25 days, stream & wetland work, and tool and equipment maintenance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Crew Supervision:
• Has primary responsibility for crew supervision. Motivates, directs and coordinates a crew of 18-25 year-old young adults in a structured program of service, restoration, and training.
• Responsible for the quality, safety and efficiency of crew work.
• Maintains discipline and positive crew morale, and fosters team-work among corpsmembers.
• Enforces the standards of behavior as well as policies and procedures of EarthCorps and ensures adherence to program goals and mission, including attendance issues.
• Leads by example while working alongside corpsmembers.

Project Implementation:
• Coordinates fieldwork projects with project managers and the Field Operations Director.
• Serves as on-site project manager for EarthCorps in the absence of a project manager.
• Maintains project and equipment logs/records as directed by a project manager.
• Assists project manager in maintaining production, quality and safety goals/standards for their crew.
• Responsible for implementing environmental restoration projects throughout King County. These projects include but are not limited to native plantings, invasive plant removal, trail construction and/or maintenance, stream restoration and erosion control.
• Leads and manages adult and youth volunteers in community volunteer events.
• The crew leader and corpsmembers will perform physical work in all weather conditions.

Training and Instruction:
• Fosters and encourages quality work and interaction among corpsmembers.
• Conducts training and presentations in such areas as: proper tool use, first aid, workplace safety, leadership/management skills, & community service.
• Assists in implementation of corpsmember development program as assigned by the program manager.

Communication:
• Prepares oral and written reports of work projects, equipment use and maintenance, corpsmember performance evaluations, education and training completed, attendance and incident reports.
• Conducts regular, individual crew meetings to discuss corpsmember progress and communicates status to program manager.
• Counsels, motivates or disciplines individual corpsmembers.
• Demonstrates sensitivity to and awareness of cultural differences and their effect on crew and corps management.
• Participates in other meetings as directed.

Program Support:
Performs other relevant duties as assigned.

CREW LEADER TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
• STATUS: Temporary, non-exempt
• PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: January - mid- December 2011, incl. two weeks of unpaid WFR training
• RATE OF PAY: From January to June, U.S. Crew Leaders receive $1,500/month and International Crew Leaders receive $385/month and room & board. From June to December, U.S. Crew Leaders receive $1,600/month and International Crew Leaders receive $485/month and room & board
• TYPICAL HOURS OF WORK: 7:20 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. Tues. - Sat., alternating Sat. & Mon. off
• 4 multiday overnights outside of Seattle will be required, vehicle camping and retreats

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Encouraged eligibility for AmeriCorps Education Award
• Knowledge of environmental restoration principles, techniques and stewardship
• Knowledge of Pacific Northwest native plants
• Leadership skills including previous supervisory experience
• Teaching experience
• Volunteer management experience
• Advanced First Aid and CPR (WFR/WFA or MOFA preferred)
• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
