ABOUT AMERICAN RIVERS: Founded in 1973, American Rivers is the leading national river conservation organization dedicated to protecting and restoring healthy natural rivers for the benefit of people, wildlife and nature. JOB SUMMARY: The Organizer leads a campaign to ensure the Obama Administration prioritizes the protection and restoration of rivers, lakes, and other freshwater resources nationwide through America's Great Outdoors (AGO) Initiative. In coordination with the broader environmental community's efforts, the Organizer will execute a comprehensive media, outreach, and advocacy strategy to raise the visibility of rivers, clean water, and Blue Trails in the initiative.

Over the next eight months, the Organizer will: (1) coordinate conservation, recreation, and outdoor groups and businesses around discrete river and water conservation goals; (2) oversee a nationwide outreach strategy to demonstrate support for freshwater protection and restoration; and (3) lead advocacy efforts to ensure the Administration adopts strong policies and programs to protect and restore rivers as a part of their initiative.

This is a full-time (40 hours/week) temporary position. We anticipate the project's duration to be 6 months, funding permitting. This position requires constant travel to listening sessions held across the country.

DUTIES AND RESPOSIBILITIES:

* Coordinate and coalesce river and water conservation, recreation, and outdoor groups and individuals around common messages and goals.
* Assist in creating a national river and water AGO steering committee.
* Implement a national and local messaging and communications campaign.
* Demonstrate local support for protection and restoration by highlighting compelling on-the-ground examples and success stories at listening sessions and elsewhere.
* Advocate for river protection and restoration and policies and programs that are ultimately adopted by the Administration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

* Significant knowledge and experience with grassroots organizing, environmental policy and advocacy.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with diverse constituencies and stakeholders including conservation groups, faith organizations, garden and recreation clubs, business leaders, and others.
* Highly organized and able to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
* Respect for diverse viewpoints and good listening skills.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.
* At least 3 years of experience in a relevant field.
* Ddvanced degree or professional certification in a relevant field is preferred.
* Ability and willingness to paddle the river and transport gear as needed.
* Ability to work evenings and weekends.
* Passion for rivers and healthy, and a sense of humor.
