Job Description: 

The AMC is seeking a highly motivated and professional individual to serve as Trails Supervisor, to be based out of the AMC's Pinkham Notch, NH facility. The Trail Supervisor is part of a team of highly skilled and dedicated individuals that manage and maintain over 350 miles of non-motorized trails primarily in New Hampshire's White Mountains and the Mahoosuc Mountains of Maine. The Trails Supervisor also works with other non-profit organizations; State and Federal agencies and conservation organizations overseeing trail construction, layout and maintenance projects on a contract basis.

The Trails Supervisor (TS) is primarily responsible for the planning, training and field oversight of the staff and work of the Professional Trail Crew program throughout New England. The TS is also responsible for project logistics, trail layout, trail signing and trails facilities maintenance while insuring that work is preformed to the highest of standards. Additional duties include assessing trail work needs and field consultations with Volunteer Trail Adopters and Volunteer trail workers. The Appalachian Mountain Club Trails Supervisor reports to the Director of Trails and Recreation Management. This full time, year round exempt position offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits.

Responsibilities

* Has Primary authority for recruiting, training, scheduling and overseeing of 18+ seasonal employees.
* Work with government and other cooperators to identify and secure future trail work projects.
* Oversee department's equipment and supplies including purchasing and inventory.
* Assist in the development of trail contracts including cost estimates and trails logs.
* Enforce established policies and guidelines to ensure the safe and responsible use of the Trails Dept. vehicles, equipment and facilities.
* Work closely with the Director of Trails and Recreation Management on fundraising, grant writing and program budget development.
* Maintain trail condition database and work priority database.
* Assist in the development and fulfillment of the Trails facility capital and maintenance work.
* Instruct and develop Skills Training Sessions.
* Prepare and present trails related programs to a wide-range of audiences.
* Serve on a variety of internal and external committees.
* Willingness to travel throughout the Northeast and work some evenings and weekends.
* Other duties as assigned.

Employment Qualifications

* This position requires that the candidate possess excellent supervisory, leadership and field management skills.
* Extensive knowledge of a wide range of trail maintenance and construction techniques.
* Ability to create and instruct trail construction and maintenance workshops.
* Strong communication, motivation and organizational skills.
* Familiarity of Microsoft email, internet software.
* Flexible team player with an ability to work independently with an attention to detail and a great sense of humor.
* Bachelor's degree and several years experience in related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
* Wilderness First Responder certification is desirable.
* Must be capable of safely traveling alone in the backcountry long distances carrying loads in excess of 40 pounds during all seasons and weather conditions.
