Job Description: 

Alaska Wilderness League, the only Washington, DC-based conservation organization devoted
exclusively to protecting Alaska's wilderness, seeks to fill a new position - Alaska Outreach
Coordinator. This individual is responsible for building and maintaining a diverse base of support
for the wilderness quality lands in Alaska managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The
BLM manages over 100 million acres in Alaska, from the headwaters of Bristol Bay to the mighty
Yukon River. This individual reports to the Environmental Justice Director and works with the
program team collaborative to determine work priorities. It is part of the culture of AWL that staff
members enjoy their work-are creative, innovative, opportunistic, persistent-and keep their jobs
rewarding by constantly looking for new challenges and exploring ways to be more effective.

Qualifications: BA or BS, 5-plus years of experience with a nonprofit organization. Excellent written
and oral communication skills, confident public speaker, strong leadership and motivational abilities,
sense of humor, and ability and desire to work in a team environment all essential. A keen interest
and understanding of Alaska Native cultures and experience working with tribal communities is
strongly encouraged. This position is located in Alaska.

Job Description
Goal: Identify and engage key and diverse stakeholders and the public to build an army of support for protections of
wilderness-quality lands managed by the BLM.

I. Internal Campaign Work

Develop and oversee the League's outreach efforts for the BLM's five regional planning
areas throughout Alaska, including the National Petroleum Reserve - Alaska (NPRA).
Provide general support and guidance for communications and lower-48 outreach
related to the League's BLM campaign.
Draft and/or edit copy for BLM campaign materials including web site, newsletter, press
releases, direct mail pieces, and other info related to issue
Speak and make presentations at wilderness and other conferences and to other public
gatherings.
II. External Campaign Work

Be a leader among Alaska groups and stakeholders on BLM issues
Work with allies to explore and identify strongest protections for BLM wildlands
Help coordinate the activities of conservation groups, local and indigenous stakeholders,
fishing interests, and other public interest groups and community stakeholders to ensure
divergent groups are working in as coordinated and collaborative way as possible for
BLM wildlands and waters protection
Travel to communities, to meetings and hearings as needed to help build support for
BLM's wild places.
Assist tribes and other community stakeholders in developing public comments and
position statements
Build a broad coalition of spokespeople/leaders who can effectively influence the
planning processes and further wilderness goals.
III. Other
Perform own administrative tasks such as photocopying, faxing, filing, data entry, etc.
Have fun. Be creative, innovative, opportunistic, and persistent. Explore ways to
do things better. Look for challenges to keep your job rewarding and your
personal skills growing.
