WildEarth Guardians is a regional conservation organization committed to protecting and restoring wildlife, wild rivers, and wild places in the American West. One of our primary programs at WildEarth Guardians is our Wildlife Program, an important component of which is Endangered Species Act enforcement. We are searching for a very highly motivated individual to work as Endangered Species Advocate, which entails using science and the law to promote federal protections for a wild variety of imperiled species. Position Summary The focus of the Endangered Species Advocate will be to obtain federal listing, critical habitat, recovery plans, and other vital protections for imperiled species under the Endangered Species Act. Strategic engagement on state or local issues that bear on imperiled species may also be necessary, to be decided with the Wildlife Program Director, to whom the Advocate will report. Responsibilities • Work with the Wildlife Program Director to determine priority species for conservation efforts. • Investigate the biological and conservation status of potentially imperiled species and ecosystems. • Prepare formal petitions, comments, and other correspondence to federal and state agencies on select species as needed. • Review reports by, and correspond with, government agencies, scientists, and other individuals/institutions that relate to review of select species and ecosystems. Experience & Education: Individuals with 2 or more years of experience in environmental advocacy are preferred, as are individuals with a J.D., or an M.S. or Ph.D. in a relevant field. Special Job Requirements: An interdisciplinary mind. This position entails analysis of science, policy, and the law to determine the most effective ways to advocate for species on the brink. In addition, this position requires superior writing and verbal communication skills.
