Job Description: 

The Norman Bird Sanctuary is a not-for-profit environmental education center and wildlife sanctuary dedicated to helping people of all ages better understand, appreciate and care for the world of nature. Located a short distance from Newport, Rhode Island, the Sanctuary encompasses over 325 acres and seven miles of trails that wind through diverse habitats. The property includes forests, fields, vernal pools, a pond, four scenic ridges, and a wide stretch of tidal salt marsh and beach.

NBS serves a broad range of audiences. Camp programs are held from June 28-August 20, with age-appropriate sessions for grades PreK-12. Groups consist of up to 16 children with two instructors (one lead teacher and one co-teacher) and one volunteer junior counselor.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop and plan interactive and interdisciplinary camp programming for grades PreK-8. Create curriculum and program materials; Teach programs in ecology, environmental science, and general environmental education. Provide enthusiastic and innovative instruction, teaching through hands-on and inquiry-based methods that encourage exploration, appreciation, and stewardship of the natural environment; Lead groups of up to 16 children in an outdoor setting; Handle and teach with captive wildlife; Supervise high-school interns.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree or coursework towards a degree in Environmental Education, Biology, or Early Childhood Education. Experience working with children in a responsible and professional setting. Demonstrated experience in formal and/or informal teaching desired. Knowledge of (or strong interest in) natural sciences preferred. Ability to work in a team, ability to interact well with visitors, and physical ability to work actively throughout the property in a variety of weather conditions. Enthusiasm for working with children and sense of humor is a must. All staff members must pass national and state background checks and possess valid CPR and First Aid certifications valid through August 20, 2010 (Two nights of Red Cross training will be provided during staff training week).

Lead Teachers must be college graduates with significant teaching or environmental experience; Co-teachers must be high school graduates or college students with a passion for teaching others about the natural world.

COMPENSATION: $7.75-10/hour based upon experience and position. Contract runs June 21-August 24, M-F 8:00-4:00 (includes one full week of staff training and two days of camp clean up). Preference will be given to candidates who can commit to the entire season.
