Job Description: 

The Wildlife Care Supervisor is primarily responsible for the the health and overall care of resident wildlife. S/he supports the Wildlife Program Coordinator by designing and conducting teacher naturalist trainings as it pertains to the use of wildlife, training of program animals, and other aspects of the operations of the Wildlife Care Unit. The Wildlife Care Supervisor co-supervises the assistants and volunteers in the department.

Responsibilities:

Supervises and participates in the care of wildlife including feeding, cleaning cages and enclosures, enrichment, maintaining USDA requirements and standards, administering medications, addressing health issues in cooperation with the veterinarian, and other standard and emergency measures.
Trains and co-supervises Wildlife Care Assistants and volunteers in carrying out their responsibilities.
Procures food and other supplies.
Assists with animal acquisitions and the training of newly acquired wildlife.
Assists with tracking of annual budget.
Conducts trainings for teachers on wildlife handling.
Works with the Wildlife Program Coordinator and key education staff to develop wildlife programming.
Performs various building, exhibit and grounds maintenance projects required to support the wildlife care unit.
Qualifications: A college degree in a related field and 3 years of experience as a veterinary technician or equivalent in an animal care field. Proven supervisory and organizational skills. Strong knowledge of wildlife biology and related natural history topics. Ability to communicate easily with the staff and the public. Prior environmental education experience preferred. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Requires First Aid and CPR certification upon hire, as well as successful completion of a CORI and SORI screening. Valid MA driver‘s license, ability to lift 50 pounds and traverse uneven terrain. Knowledge of basic carpentry skills helpful. Must be able to cover for all wildlife care staff, including emergencies and snow days. Will include some weekends and holidays.
