Job Description: 

The Mid-Atlantic Recreation Planner is responsible for developing and implementing the Appalachian Mountain Club's (AMC) vision of an interconnected network of non-motorized trails and conservation lands in the Pennsylvania (PA) Highlands located in southeastern PA. The Recreation Planner will work closely with other AMC staff members, volunteers, state agencies, county planning commissions, municipalities, area residents, land trusts, trail groups and other local officials to help increase the overall visibility of and access to the Mid-Atlantic Highlands as a region of high conservation and recreation value.

In 2006 AMC began the campaign to create the Pennsylvania Highlands Trail Network, which is a central focus of this position. The Trail Network encourages close-to-home recreation in the PA Highlands and will extend the 150-mile Highlands Trail in New York (NY) and New Jersey (NJ) into PA. It will traverse the 13-county, 1.9 million acre PA Highlands, which are part of the larger 3.5-million acre Highlands region in PA, NJ, NY and Connecticut. This is a full-time position within AMC's Trails program, with day-to-day supervision under AMC's Mid-Atlantic Project Manager. It will be based out of AMC's Mid-Atlantic office in Bethlehem, PA. This position will also interface with AMC's trail volunteers in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, AMC's Mid-Atlantic chapters, as well as AMC's Trails staff based in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts, who are working on similar projects in New England.

Responsibilities

* Plan and implement an interconnected network of non-motorized trails and conservation land in the PA Highlands---the "Pennsylvania Highlands Trail Network."
* Lead a coalition of partners to plan, create, and manage the envisioned trail network.
* Facilitate and organize roundtable discussions, open houses, and steering committees related to the trail network.
* Utilize global positioning system tools to collect data for possible trail route and trail amenities.
* Coordinate with AMC's GIS Scientist to review potential trail routes and corridors of ecological value.
* Develop agreements with private and public property owners for the trail network.
* Identify and secure resources for trail construction.
* Work with AMC's communications staff to increase the visibility of and support for conservation initiatives in the Mid-Atlantic Highlands.
* Develop and coordinate publications including hiking trail descriptions and recreational maps.
* Coordinate, support and serve as a liaison and an advocate for AMC trail volunteers and chapters.
* Write grant applications and secure funds for trails needs, including, tools, equipment and projects.
* Work with other AMC policy and communications staff to promote outdoor recreation in the PA Highlands and help connect PA residents with outdoor recreational opportunities.

Employment Qualifications

* Ability to work constructively with volunteers, land and trail managers, and public officials to develop and implement a common vision across multiple communities.
* Familiarity with a range of trail, recreation corridor, and land protection tools, especially at the local and regional scale.
* Ability to perform scouting hikes for potential trail corridors.
* Expertise in recreation planning, trail design, and construction.
* Strong advocate for outdoor recreation
* Ability to build and sustain collaborative partnerships.
* Facilitation skills and experience in organizing meetings and events.
* Excellent written and verbal presentation skills.
* Strong communication, motivation and organizational skills.
* Flexible team player with an ability to also work independently with an attention to detail.
* Familiarity with collecting GPS data and using GPS Pathfinder Office software, GIS, and Microsoft Office software
* Knowledge and use of social networking including Facebook and blogs.
* Bachelor's degree and several years experience in related field preferred.
* Willingness to travel throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and work some evenings and weekends
* Physical Abilities Required: Most work is performed in a standard office setting. Must be able to stand, sit, walk, lift up to 20 pounds from floor to waist height, and operate standard office equipment. Must be able to travel independently and safely in all weather conditions on the hiking trails of the Pennsylvania Region, carrying up to 25-pounds in a backpack.
