Job Description: 

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation seeks a temporary Virginia Chesapeake Clean Water Campaign Coordinator in its Virginia State Office in Richmond, Virginia.

THE CHESAPEAKE BAY FOUNDATION

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is the largest regional non-profit conservation organization working solely to save the Bay. Established in 1967, CBF has a staff of approximately 185 employees working in offices in Annapolis and Salisbury, Maryland; Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and Washington, D.C., and in 17 field education program locations. CBF's headquarters office is in the Philip Merrill Environmental Center, a "cutting edge," environmentally responsible building located in Annapolis, Maryland.

CBF has an annual budget of approximately $21 million and is supported by more than 226,000 members, volunteers, and other supporters. For more information on CBF please visit www.cbf.org.

CONTEXT OF THE POSITION

CBF is seeking to fill a full-time temporary position to coordinate Virginia Office grassroots outreach in support of the Chesapeake Clean Water Act (CCWA) from the end of March through June 30, 2010, with the potential for a three-month extension.

Essential functions include:

* Assist the Virginia Grassroots Assistant and Hampton Roads Science Advocate in outreach to college students and on campuses in Hampton Roads, Richmond, and Charlottesville.
* Coordinate CBF's grassroots outreach activities with other environmental organizations, including the League of Conservation Voters, Environment Virginia, Piedmont Environmental Council, and Virginia Conservation Network.
* Identify and recruit additional organizations, traditional and nontraditional, to actively support federal legislation.
* Assist the Virginia Staff Scientist in outreach to the agriculture community.
* Assist CBF communications staff in submitting letters to the editor to local newspapers.
* Draft emails and materials to be sent to CBF members with specific requests for action for the Virginia Executive Director.
* Staff informational booths at various events across Virginia to recruit supporters of federal legislation and generate individual letters to key legislators.
* Present information about Bay restoration at speaking events across Virginia, organization meetings, and invited lectures.
* Generate multiple postcards, individual letters, calls, and visits to key legislators in support of federal legislation.
* Coordinate the Virginia Office Clean Water Captains thorough one-on-one mentoring and monthly conference calls. (Clean Water Captains are volunteers who recruit additional CCWA supporters locally, in key legislative districts)


PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Successful candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years of experience that include a variety of grassroots organizing, volunteer leadership and training, and demonstrated insight and skills. Successful candidates have demonstrated abilities using strong interpersonal skills to motivate the public to take action for the environment. Successful candidates offer at least five years of supervisory or project management experience.

Successful candidates will demonstrate excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; an ability and commitment to work with partner groups and individuals; and an ability to work with people with divergent points of views and values. Successful candidates offer extensive experience in strategy development and advocacy on legislative, budgetary, and regulatory matters. Successful candidates must have strong time management skills as well as project management skills. Successful candidates must show a proven long-term commitment to environmental protection and conservation. Proficiency with computers and database management is necessary.
