Job Description: 

Indiana's waterways are among the most polluted in the country, the consequence of longstanding,
unsustainable approaches to economic development. Help lead Indiana to restore its rivers and lakes
by joining HEC as our Water and Agriculture Campaign Director. The successful applicant will be
responsible for leading a statewide campaign to promote responsible and sustainable approaches to
protecting our waterways, with an emphasis on reducing the impacts of agriculture on our rivers, lakes
and streams.
Required Skills & Knowledge
 Organizing skills - leadership skills to organize the efforts of volunteers in support of a focused,
time-sensitive goal (e.g. passage of legislation, adoption of a regulation, launch of an
educational event)
 Excellent communication skills - able to communicate with ease with elected officials,
stakeholders (e.g. agribusiness, sustainable farmers, urban consumers), donors & members
 Outstanding writing skills - for writing speeches, OpEds, policy briefs & grants
 Exceptional project management skills - able to multi-task, simultaneously manage educational
and advocacy initiatives; able to work within the parameters of a grant
 Policy & institutional knowledge - solid understanding of key federal and state policies
governing water and agriculture; familiarity with IDEM, DNR, U.S. EPA practices
Additional Experience and Skills Desired
 Political/advocacy experience
 Rural background
 Economic development experience
Educational Requirements, one or more of the following
a) Masters degree in an environmental field (with a science, economics, or political science
emphasis), with a focus on either water and/or agriculture plus 3 or more years of full-time
relevant work experience
b) Bachelors degree in an environmental field plus at least 5 years full-time relevant experience
c) Law degree or MBA, with at least two years of environmental-related work experience
Nature of the Job
 Patience to make large-scale change, passion for water and agricultural issues
 40+ hours, occasionally evening/weekend meetings, with needed statewide travel
 Benefits include 75% of monthly health care premium for employee-only, basic plan
