Job Description: 

Our Washington DC advocacy office represents Environment America in federal policy matters. Our organization's roots at the state level give Environment America a unique "outside the beltway" perspective on the issues, while our state staff, members, campus chapters, and national field organizers provide the grassroots power necessary to enact change at the federal level.

Environment America is seeking an experienced Communications Director for its fast-paced Federal Advocacy Office in Washington, D.C. The Federal Communications Director is responsible for developing and implementing a communications strategy to increase the visibility of our federal environmental campaigns. The Federal Communications Director would maintain and further develop Environment America's relationships with national reporters, increase placement in national, local and non-traditional media, and work with Environment America's advocacy and campaign staff to win issue campaigns.

Job Description

• Work with program staff in D.C. and field staff in the states to develop messages and manage outreach to national media outlets on federal environmental campaigns;
• Organize compelling news conferences, media briefings, and teleconferences on federal policy issues;
• Partner with program and field staff for nation-wide report releases and other media events;
• Execute rapid response for breaking environmental news stories;
• Manage national editorial board and columnist outreach;

Qualifications

We're looking for a goal-driven and results-oriented individual with a strong commitment to protecting the public's interest. The ideal candidate will have three to eight years of relevant professional campaign or journalism experience, post-college, including (but not limited to) work in political, policy, legal, journalistic, or government settings. Candidate must be well-organized, a self-starter, flexible, creative, able to work under pressure while keeping a sense of humor, and be able to work quickly and cooperatively on several projects at one time. Excellent writing and verbal skills are essential.

Salary for this position is commensurate with a candidate's relevant professional experience and/or advanced degrees.
