Job Description: 

 

The Alaska Conservation Alliance seeks an experienced organizer to serve as a Climate Change Project Coordinator.

Background:
In 2007, the National LCV Education Fund, in partnership with the state leagues, launched a major campaign to elevate global warming in the 2008 presidential primaries. The Heat Is On campaign (www.heatison.org) was active in the early-voting states for more than a year. In 2008-2009, LCVEF & ACA plan to build on this work to make climate change a top priority for citizens and particularly for Alaska's Senatorial delegation. The Project Coordinator will oversee the day-to-day planning and implementation of this program.


Position Description:
The Project Coordinator will work closely with ACA's Executive Director and coalition partners to implement ACA's Heat is On campaign plan, coordinate state-level activities, conduct outreach to opinion leaders, generate earned media, and engage voters on the urgency and importance of enacting strong climate change legislation.


Duties and Responsibilities:

* Work with Executive Director and LCV Education Fund to develop and implement a strategic plan to elevate climate change and help pass priority climate change legislation;
* Involve each coalition group at an optimum level and reach out to new groups as needed to strengthen the coalition;
* Serve as a grassroots and grasstops organizer, particularly outreaching to non-traditional allies concerned about climate change;
* Work with media, legal and technical service providers to ensure optimal participation and effectiveness;
* Update and maintain Heat Is On related information on ACA's webpage and various social networking sites.
* Meet with opinion leaders (reporters, editorial boards, state elected officials, donors, etc) to engage them on the need for strong climate change legislation.

 

Qualifications:

* The ideal candidates will have a college degree and several years experience in organizing and advocacy. Skills should include:
* Outstanding organizing and proven grassroots and grasstops outreach skills
* Strong networking skills
* Strong communication skills including public speaking and advocacy writing
* Ability to work independently
* Ability and experience juggling complex tasks
* Ability and interest to travel to remote locations
* Experience on and commitment to climate change a plus
* Understanding of and experience with state agency and legislative process an asset
* Familiarity with Alaska, Alaskan public officials and politics an asset
* Basic computer skills
* High level of organization, a strong sense of teamwork and a sense of humor

 

Compensation:
Salary is DOE. This is a contract position running through completion of the campaign (approximately December 2009). The position will be based in Anchorage, Alaska.
