Job Description: 

EcoVentures International (EVI) envisions a world of sustainable economic growth and secure livelihoods born out of the recognition that economic, social, environmental, and generational sustainability are indivisible and therefore must be considered at the core of international development. The EVI Mission is to empower people and communities to build economically and environmentally sustainable livelihoods, enterprises, and communities. We achieve this mission by conducting market assessments of sustainable economic sectors and identifying enterprise opportunities; researching innovative approaches to natural resource management and payments for ecosystem services; advising international non-governmental organizations, local community-based organizations, and local governments to catalyze economic growth without degrading local resources; and, working directly with micro- and small-enterprises, rural farmers, and other land-users to improve their livelihoods.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND AREAS OF TRAINING
Through its Environmental Research Fellowship, EVI aims to develop future leaders and professionals who will carry forward its goals and vision throughout the United States and the world. Fellows should have experience in international development, sustainability initiatives, environmental economics, environmental management, and/or mentorship, training, and curricula development.


Field experience outside of the US and foreign language skills are strongly preferred. A strong interest in both economic development/poverty reduction and natural resource management is critical for successful applicants.

Competitive candidates will possess the following:

  • BA/BS in related field, Masters Degree candidates highly valued.
  • Excellent writing and research skills.
  • Experience with fundraising, grant writing, project proposals and contract management.
  • Initiative, enthusiasm, curiosity, and drive.
  • Ability to work effectively, both independently and with a team.
  • Interest in innovative development work and environmental enterprise.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:
Fellows will be introduced to the concepts of environmental enterprise development with an emphasis on researching innovative approaches to natural resource management and ecosystem preservation.

Core responsibilities will include:

Research (40%)

  • Carrying out independent research on topics related to EVI program areas and delivering briefings to the EVI team;
  • Conducting desk research (including literature reviews and key informant interviews) in support of EVI projects;
  • Working as part of team to design field research tools and protocols;
  • Conducting field research (including surveys, focus groups, interviews, and observations)


Development and Outreach (30%)

  • Participating in communities of practice, knowledge networks, and other interactive forums related to EVI program areas;
  • Identifying partnership and grant opportunities to support EVI programs; and,
  • Monitoring trends within EVI program areas


Program Assistance (20%)

  • Preparing scopes of work, contracts, and budgets for EVI projects
  • Managing contract deliverables for EVI projects
  • Supporting the monitoring and evaluation of EVI projects

Operations and Administrative

Support (10%)

  • Supporting EVI staff as needed


Fellows must be comfortable working as part of a small team and willing to work in a flexible and fast-paced work environment. Fellowships may require some domestic and/or international travel.

 

Application instructions:

COMMITMENT:
A minimum of 32 hours weekly commitment, (40 hour commitment preferred). Fellowships run for a period of 6-9 months with the possibility of extension or transition to full-time position. A stipend of $1,500 per month is available for qualified applicants.
