Job Description:

Reporting to the Division Director of Development (DDD), the Northern Rockies Director of Development ("State" Director of Development, SDD) is responsible for expanding and managing all fundraising in the Northern Rockies program, covering Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. S/he will be a highly motivated self-starter in identifying and cultivating new individual prospects for the Northern Rockies program, defining and promoting the Northern Rockies' gift opportunities, and raising funds in support of the Northern Rockies program and unrestricted gifts for TPL as a whole. The SDD is responsible for identifying and managing a portfolio of prospects and donors, and cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding these relationships within the Northern Rockies states, consistent with the primary staff rule.

The SDD has a dotted line report to the Northern Rockies Director. The SDD and the Northern Rockies Director will have a close working relationship, which functions in most cases as a partnership in raising funds for the Northern Rockies Program. The SDD is responsible for planning and implementing the development program in the Northern Rockies. S/he works with the Northern Rockies Director and DDD in creating Northern Rockies development budgets and goals.

The SDD will work with the Northern Rockies Director-in collaboration with the DDD-to build a new Northern Rockies Board. The SDD, Northern Rockies Director, and future Board Chair will work in partnership to build a full Board and implement strong volunteer engagement in development and conservation work in this three-state program.

Expectations:

* For first year, raise receipts in the amount of $750,000, to grow to $1.5 million annually when the program expands and matures.
* For first year, carry between 150-200 prospects, eventually growing to 300-500 prospects.
* For first year, make 10 prospect calls/visits per month, or 120 calls annually. This will grow to the TPL standard of 12-15 visits per month when the program is more mature.

Responsibilities:

* Systematically identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward new individual and institutional donors capable of making contributions to TPL. This position will emphasize building a base of new individual donors who give gifts of $1,000 to $25,000 across the three Northern Rockies states. Educate prospects and donors about TPL's mission, programs and conservation outcomes, and develop specific strategies and tailored cases for support.
* Maintain and deepen existing donor relationships through regular, relevant communication and stewardship.
* Provide the strategic vision and collaborative leadership necessary to help plan and execute a comprehensive fundraising program across the Northern Rockies states; help set and bear responsibility for meeting Northern Rockies philanthropic revenue goals; personally cultivate and solicit gifts; and create sustainable and reliable development income that supports the entire organization.
* With the Northern Rockies Director and DDD, implement a clear action plan for developing a Northern Rockies Board; partner with the Northern Rockies Director in identifying a Northern Rockies Board Chair.
* Provide leadership, direction, and coordination of Northern Rockies fundraising strategy and activities, in keeping with TPL's strategic plan, development priorities, TPL-wide operating model, and market-based programs.
* Plan and carefully manage the Northern Rockies development budget and resources, ensuring they are allocated efficiently and effectively, maximizing return on investment and ensuing comprehensive service throughout the Northern Rockies.
* Work collaboratively with the DDD to ensure that Northern Rockies volunteers, director, and program staff are trained sufficiently in development and volunteer engagement techniques, strategies, and best practices.
* With development associate, maintain donor tracking records on Pledgemaker and generate donor tracking reports for both individual and institutional donors.
* With marketing staff, coordinate or write donor communications and special events and donor-related marketing activities.
* Embrace diversity as a strategic advantage.
* Model and foster excellent customer service standards.
* Responsible for the effective day-to-day supervision of Northern Rockies Development Associate (.5 FTE to development), who reports to the Northern Rockies Director.

Qualifications:

* Minimum 6 or more years of advanced development experience with demonstrated success in individual donor solicitation and work with volunteer boards.
* Demonstrated experience building a base of individual donors and closing gifts from individuals
* Demonstrated experience with volunteer Boards
* Expertise in the methodologies of giving, including being able to market planned gifts
* A proven ability to work autonomously and to keep a number of cultivations moving simultaneously, along with the ability to function independently with a variety of important audiences, including volunteers, key staff, major donors, and prospects.
* The ability to function effectively as a member of a team, and a willingness to participate in activities and assignments that will benefit other members of the team or will contribute to the accomplishment of team objectives
* Experience with best practices including the efficient use of database systems, including prospect tracking, a willingness to strengthen strategies through prospect review, and an openness to share development techniques while learning TPL's system of best practices
* Outstanding verbal and written communication skills along with exceptional interpersonal and organizational abilities
* Knowledge, experience and contacts in the Rockies philanthropic community highly desirable
* Available for travel to meet with individuals and foundations in the Northern Rockies program area
