Overview: Stantec is one of the largest employers of full-time experienced field biologists in the US East. Our current staff of professionals includes specialists in wildlife biology, marine biology, wetland science, botany, hydrology, forestry, habitat restoration, permitting, and GIS. State and Federal regulators have respect for Stantec scientists and their work. Our Environmental Management Group is dedicated to managing environmental issues proactively and professionally. In the Environmental Management Group of Stantec, team members have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of projects that may include endangered species assessments, habitat restoration, wetland characterizations, or hydrologic assessments. We focus on hiring exceptionally talented, enthusiastic, and hard working individuals that have a keen interest in the natural sciences and working in a team based environment. Responsibilities: The Primary responsibilities for the Field Technician will involve conducting one or more types of wildlife surveys, including spring and fall raptor migration, breeding bird, nocturnal passerine migration, and bat mist-netting. Some of the assignments include on site deployment at operational windfarms to conduct mortality monitoring. Most projects are located throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States, as well as eastern Canada. Fieldwork is available in the spring from April to June and in the fall from late August to mid October for wildlife surveys and from April to November for on-site mortality monitoring; additional field projects will likely be available during the summer. Some positions are also available to assist with data analysis in our Topsham, Maine, office. Please indicate if you would also be interested in these positions.
This position is a future need for Stantec , we will be reviewing resumes and contacting qualified candidates the month of March/April 2010. Qualifications: Successful applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, or related field, a strong interest in wildlife biology, and 1 to 3 years of relevant experience. Superb observation skills are highly valued, as are a keen interest in ecosystems, comfort with computers and technology, a willingness to learn new skills while conducting fieldwork in rural or wilderness settings, and flexibility in undertaking work assignments.
Applicants interested in raptor or breeding bird surveys should describe prior experience with visual and acoustic bird identification and should have their own binoculars (10x42 or better) or spotting scope. Applicants interested in bat mist-netting projects should have a rabies vaccination. Willingness to travel and work independently for long hours in the field is necessary. Candidates should be in good physical condition and have a reliable personal vehicle. In addition to a competitive salary, lodging, mileage, and a daily stipend are provided.
